CORFU. The Detox Unit provides individuals with an addiction the opportunity for physical and pharmaceutical detoxification.

Corfu Hospital Detox Unit has achieved a significant distinction, securing 2nd place in the Healthcare Awards 2023.

The detox unit provides individuals with an addiction the opportunity for physical and pharmaceutical detoxification. It was licensed in 2019 and is located in a separate area of the hospital, assisting in the detoxification of patients addicted to substances such as heroin, buprenorphine, benzodiazepines and alcohol. The duration of hospitalisation is 21 days.

Upon admission, patients undergo a comprehensive laboratory and clinical examination, and they are administered pharmacological treatment to manage withdrawal symptoms. The unit has specialised nursing staff available 24/7, and patients are supported by a psychologist during and after their hospitalisation.

In addition to the main goal of controlling withdrawal and deprivation symptoms from opioid derivatives, benzodiazepines or alcohol, the Detox Unit has the capability to collaborate with Corfu General Hospital, addressing concurrent pathological disorders. Additionally, occupational therapy and physical therapy activities are provided, along with support from the Social Services department.

After completing the hospitalisation, the interested individual has the option to either follow a closed Detox programme or participate in the open psychotherapeutic programme "Diaplous" in Corfu.

Corfu General Hospital is one of the nationwide organisations that has received special approval from the Ministry of Health for implementing addiction-related activities.

The Director of Nursing Services, Yiannis Triantafylloudis, posted the following:

"A big thank you to the nursing staff who, together with the rest of the scientific team, have made this department a nationwide model. I would like to express my gratitude to the Director, Ms. Englezopoulou, and the former Director, Mr. Roumbatis, for their support in the operation and development of the unit.

A special thanks to the head of the department, Natassa Zotos, and nurse Eleni Mitsika for their systematic work in submitting the file.

Once again, I publicly thank all the employees of our hospital's nursing service for their effort, professionalism and dedication to their work. It is an honour for me to be their Director."
