CORFU. After eight months΄ police presence in South Corfu the main road re-opened last night and the police are withdrawing.

The move comes following the recent announcement from Hellenic Police headquarters.

The police had been called in to safeguard the operation of Lefkimmi landfill and the transportation of waste from Temploni. Their presence caused innumerable incidents and clashes - in one of which a young man lost his hand - and a general outcry from residents. It cost millions of Euros and the Town Council was unable to function properly due to angry protests from the residents of South Corfu.

Lefkimmi residents gathered on the main road again last night - not to protest this time, but to celebrate!
