CORFU. The Corfu branch of SYRIZA condemned the verbal abuse aimed at the Mayor and Councillors at the Town Council meeting.

Corfu SYRIZA issued the following statement:

Corfu SYRIZA categorically condemns the actions of a 'small number of people' at today's Town Council meeting. We believe that nobody has the right to hold the island hostage in this way, again and again obstructing the Council meetings - where decisions are taken that affect the whole island.

No problem has ever been solved in this way. Quite the opposite - many are created when the official representatives, the Mayor and the Town Council, are violently obstructed from carrying out their duties. This also needs to be understood by all the municipal parties, who should, as one body, support the functioning of this institution by being present at the Council meeting and condemning - without any kind of mitigation - this type of conduct.

We believe that these types of far-right actions - insults, abuse and attempts to threaten the Mayor and the Councillors - are extremely dangerous and cannabalistic. They undermine democracy itself and have no place in Corfu's democratic culture.

Nobody is a winner in these situations, everyone is a loser - especially our democracy. For this reason there are no mitigating factors.

We support the Corfu Mayor and ask all parties - political, municipal and regional - to categorically condemn these continuous efforts to undermine democratic institutions.
