CORFU. There was a meeting with the Corfu and Regional Police Chiefs today.

The Mayor of Corfu Kostas Nikolouzos, Town Council President Maria Mouzakiti, leader of the 'Kerkyraion Dimos' party Meropi Ydraiou and leader of the 'Kerkyra na Zis' party Yiannis Trepeklis attended the meeting whose purpose was to discuss Lefkimmi residents' problems, such as the closure of the main road, and to see what is happening with Minister Olga Gerovasili's promise that the riot police will be withdrawn.

Emerging from the police headquarters the Mayor said that it had been reconfirmed that there was another plan in the making regarding the police presence in Lefkimmi and reiterated the need for agreement and dialogue.

He made the following statement: "Together with the leaders of the Kerkyraion Dimos and Kerkyra na Zis parties we met with the Police Chiefs and a very fruitful discussion.

We brought up the matter discussed at the municipal council following the request of Lefkimmi residents - the re-opening of the main road in Lefkimmi. It was confirmed that there is a plan being prepared regarding the presence of the police and the withdrawal of the riot police (MAT). What was said by all sides was that the operational plan to deal with any dangers is the responsibility of the police and not the Municipality. There was a cooperative atmosphere at the meeting. We await the developments from the police and political leadership but I would like to reiterate that the problems are not a matter for the police or army - they must be solved with dialogue and community cooperation."
