CORFU. How the Cyber Crimes Unit was able to trace the 39-year-old Corfu man.
A 39-year-old man was arrested by the Cyber Crimes Unit on Tuesday 22 January and charged with child pornography and online child pornography.
In its investigation the Cyber Crimes Unit made us of evidence provided by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, according to which an unknown internet user in Greece was in communication with a girl who was a US minor via a message service. He was able to persuade the girl to provide several nude photos and videos, which he then sent to relatives.
The Athens Prosecutor's Office was informed and they issued a waiver of communications confidentiality. Following correspondence between the Cyber Crimes Unit and the internet service provider the majority of the relevant digital footprints were traced to the home internet connection of a Greek national on an Ionian Island.
On the morning of 22 January a team from the Cyber Crimes Unit, with the assistance of Corfu police, searched the 39-year-old's house and found and confiscated two external hard drives, an internal hard drive and a mobile phone.
Investigation of the digital evidence revealed evidence of the case in question along with thousands of files showing sexual abuse of minors.
The Cyber Crimes Unit charged him with child pornography and he was taken to appear before the Prosecutor before being taken to a magistrate for interrogation.
The confiscated digital evidence will be sent to the Cyber Crimes lab for examination.
