500,000 Euros for a Centre to promote biodiversity in Corfu and Paxos

CORFU. The Ionian Islands Regional Governor signed off on funding of 500,000 Euros for the creation of a Centre to promote the biodiversity and protected areas of Corfu and Paxos.

It was one of 12 acts (with a budget of 3,866,401 Euros) to be signed by the Regional Administration for projects to protect, conserve and gently develop ecosystems and areas of natural beauty.

The project that was signed off is "Centre for the Promotion of Biodiversity and Protected Areas in Corfu and Paxos" as part of the Ionian Islands priority programme "Protection of the Environment and Sustainable Development".

The Centre will be set up in Corfu Town in a section of the Agricultural Training Centre (KEGE) complex owned by the Hellenic Agricultural Organization (ELGO) - Dimitra which has been conceded to the Regional Administration.

The same building will also be used by the Corfu branch of the Kalamas - Acheron Management Organization which will be responsible for the management of the NATURA 2000 areas in Corfu and Paxos.

The basic aim of the project is to establish a centre to promote the natural environment of Corfu and Paxos as well as to inform and raise the awareness of residents and visitors on the two islands. The centre will provide visitors with information, education, awareness and recreation. There will be two buildings - one for offices and administration and the other an exhibition and multi-purpose area.

The Centre will include the following:

1. A permanent exhibition area (exhibits and displays, graphic representations, interactive applications) - Building B

2. Multi-purpose area with ancillary infrastructure and temporary exhibitions, seminars and conferences, screenings, environmental education programmes - Building B.

3. Office and administration space for the Kalamas - Acheron Management Organization - Building A.

4. Ancillary space (storage, WC etc.) - Building A and/or Building B.

The project includes support for nature and biodiversity - Nature and biodiversity: Surface area of habitats supported to attain a better conservation status).

The project is due to commence on 1/2/2019 and end on 31/12/2021 and is being co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
