CORFU. Following the confusion regarding the establishment of the family doctor (general Practitioner) system, the board of the Corfu Union of Family Doctors has issued the following statement:
"The family doctor system is being established in this country much later than in the rest of Europe. The aim of the system is to guarantee ongoing, comprehensive and quality primary healthcare with the emphasis on prevention and health education and not only on cure.
Adults in Corfu can register with a family doctor at Corfu Health Centre (former IKA) and Local Health Centres (TOMY) that have started operating or with general practitioners and pathologists at the Health Centre and Regional Clinics serving their area. You can register either by making an appointment with the doctor or online at the site rdv.ehealthnet.gr by following the instructions. There are still some doctors at the Health Centre and the Regional Clinics who aren't on the list of family doctors on the webpage, which we hope will be rectified. Up to now only one private doctor has been included, which makes it difficult to find a family doctor in Corfu Town as the only public doctors in town on the list are at Corfu Health Centreand the 1st Regional Clinic. For children aged 16 and under the role of the family doctor can be fulfilled by a paediatrician.
In any case, according to the the Ministry of Health, even though it is compulsory to register with a family doctor, there will be no change to public health cover after 1 January - whether they are registered or not - as there are still not enough doctors in the system to cover all the population.
The Corfu Union of Family Doctors supports the family doctor system but believe that there need to be significant improvements for it to function properly. It is essential that there need to be incentives to ensure that there are enough doctors to cover the whole population and that general practitioners at the Health Centre need to be freed from other responsibilities such as covering shortages in primary healthcare and at Corfu Hospital.
If the present situation continues then it will be impossible to apply the new system properly and improve the quality of primary healthcare for the population of the island. We hope that a solution will finally be found and that the system can operate as it should."
