CORFU. He was taken to appear before the Public Prosecutor on Friday.

The 44-year-old accused of murdering his 63-year-old fellow villager has been remanded in custody. The prosecutor and magistrate both agreed to the decision to remand him. According to police sources, it took until the early hours of Friday morning to complete the accused man's statement and on Thursday there was a crime scene reenactment in the presence of the prosecutor, the coroner and the defence lawyer.

In the end the 44-year-old confessed to the interrogators. According to the same sources, there had been a long-term conflict between the men with constant arguments. On the fatal day they had been shouting at each other in the village cafe and continued the argument on the road - according to the accused man - until he fired the shotgun.

According to the police press release the case of the murder of a 63-year-old in South Corfu has been solved. On Monday morning (26/11) a passing driver on the Dragotinon - Spartera road spotted the body of the 63-year-old foreign national.

A Regional Criminal Investigation team was sent to the location along with a team from Corfu Police who were put in charge of the investigation.

Evidence was collected over the next few days which led the police to a 44-year-old Greek national who, according to evidence to date, shot the 63-year-old with a shotgun on Sunday afternoon (25/11) in the neck and the right clavicle, fatally wounding him. A shotgun shell was found in his possession and has been sent for examination.

The victim's family had reported his disappearance to the Lefkimmi police early on Monday morning.

The initial interrogation was carried out by Corfu Police and the investigation was conducted in collaboration with the Crime Investigation Department and Lefkimmi Police Station.

The 44-year-old Greek national was taken to appear before the public prosecutor and then before the investigating magistrate this morning, who ordered that he be remanded in custody.
