ATHENS. The lawyer for the self-confessed Corfu murderer insists that his client was beaten by a group of prison inmates.
Following the denial from the Ministry of Justice, the defence lawyer posted a new statement: "The group attack, according to my client P.A., took place in Korydallos Prison with verbal abuse, threats, beatings and punches at around 18:30 on 10/1 from other inmates in his wing of Korydallos Prison. He was then taken to Korydallos Agios Pavlos prison hospital for treatment - he had minor injuries and abrasions all over his body - as well as for protection. He remained in hospital overnight.
The self-inflicted injuries which the Ministry of Justice referred to came afterwards - on the morning of 11/1 - before he was transferred to the Psychiatric Clinic at Nikaia General Hospital.
He was then taken back to the Psychiatric Clinic at Kaorydallos and remains hospitalised there in poor psychological condition.
I have submitted a request to the Central Transfer Committee for his immediate transfer. These are the facts as they stand."
