CORFU. There were reassurances from sources reporting to the local authority regarding funding for the construction of an Integrated Waste Management Facility in Temploni as announced on Monday.

There will be a change in elegibility for such investments in Europe soon - and certainly after 2021 - meaning that if the Corfu investment goes ahead, it will be completely funded centrally and by the Ministry of Economics and Development as part of the ESPA 2014-20 programme.

According to the same sources, once the study for the Corfu facility has been updated, it is considered certain that it will be included in the programme and the invitation for tenders will be issued within the time limit - the end of this year.

There was concern following what was said on Start - the Corfu TV Channel - on Wednesday night by Mr. Kremli, the European Commission official responsible for European environmental policies. He confirmed fears when he referred to changes in the European strategy in order to increase recycling to over 50% from 2020 onwards. At the recent successful meeting organized by the Alternative Cultural Workshop Mr. Damaskos talked about the same thing.

Corfu Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, talking to Enimerosi, confirmed the change in European strategy regarding refuse - contrary even to the successful Scandinavian model where they buy refuse for their own industry. The new policy will go further than the essential sorting at source and deems it necessary to discourage the manufacture of one-use plastic and packaging in order that they don't end up in the rubbish and thus put a strain on waste management and the environment.

Bearing this in mind, it is obvious that the unsuccessful National and Regional Plans need to be revised as soon as possible. And of course there remains a basic question - even if everything (contrary to what we have seen up to now) goes according to schedule, Corfu will end up with a brand new facility which is part of the old European strategy when everywhere else in Europe the new policy will be implemented!
