CORFU. What was said in the discussion about Lefkimmi landfill.
Corfu Cleansing Association issued a press release regarding the meeting of the Deputy Mayors with the European Committee for the completion of major projects:
SUBJECT: Technical meeting of representatives of Greek authorities and other organizations with the European Committee for the completion of major projects following the proposal for a budgetary amendment to the sub-project in the Cohesion Fund "Construction of a landfill site and replacement of rubbish tips in the Ionian Islands Region in Greece"; "Construction of a landfill on the island of Corfu".
On Thursday 27 September there was a technical meeting in Brussels at the Albert Borschette building between representatives from the Greek authorities, the Ministry of Finance, Development and Tourism and other responsible organizations and the European Committee for the completion of major projects following the proposal for a budgetary amendment to the sub-project in the Cohesion Fund "Construction of a landfill site and replacement of rubbish tips in the Ionian Islands Region in Greece"; "Construction of a landfill on the island of Corfu".
The main topics of discussion were:
a) The progress of the project team with the project "Construction of a landfill site and replacement of rubbish tips in the Ionian Islands Region in Greece" project and the sub-project "Construction of a landfill on the island of Corfu".
b) Formulation of definitive conclusions and committments.
The Greek delegation updated the meeting on progress to date with a detailed presentation of the technical progress in preparing the South Corfu residue landfill for operation - which has been moving forward quickly in accordance with the Corfu SYDISA plan of action. They also gave an update on the social unrest and the opposition of the local community.
The European Committee, which is kept fully informed of what is happening with the South Corfu landfill through regular reports - both regarding the technical side of things and the social side, pointed out that over the 5-year period there has been a lot of inactivity but also recognized that in the period 2015-18 there has been greater progress, especially over the last six months.
The meeting concluded with an agreement that in the immediate short-term period repairs and other work should be completed in order that the South Corfu residue landfill can start operating as soon as possible - thus avoiding the repayment of "unduly received funds".
