CORFU. Reinforcement work on the Potamos bridge - a typical case of bureaucratic ineptitude.

Following a Regional Services meeting yesterday it is planned to inspect the work which has begun after years of delay (the study was completed in 2012) today. The bureaucratic delays and back-and-forth between Corfu Regional Department,  the Decentralised Administration in Patra and Corfu Traffic Police led to the decision to go ahead under the pressure of time.

The original plan was to dam the river and drain the area where the bridge supports are located but instead of this it was decided to go ahead with the river full. The contractor dug a big hole and this filled with water - bringing the work to a halt.

The contractor informed the Regional Administration of what had happened and they will now have to come to a decision - to suspend the work and fill in the hole or find another method of carrying it out.

Not only this, but the closure of the crossroads in a busy part of town had caused traffic problems. Seeing that work had stopped, local residents took matters into their own hands and took down the barriers, opening the road to traffic once more. While waiting for the authorities to make up their minds, life must go on!
