CORFU. Deputy Mayor for Technical Services A. Goulis and Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Services Spyros Aspiotis are in Brussels to meet with members of the European Environmental Committee.
They will be discussing the waste management facilities in Mesorahi, Lefkimmi - the deadline for the licensing of the residue landfill facility runs out on Friday 28 September. If this happens, the Municipality is obliged to return the funds given for its construction - what is often referred to as a 'fine' - approximately 5m Euros.
The two Deputy Mayors are at the Committee's headquarters to submit the Mayor's request for a further extension to the deadline so that the work on the facility can be completed in order to be licensed as a residual landfill by the Ionian Islands Regional Administration.
The work that needs to be completed is to repair the damage done by the recent arson attack, the water permeability of the substrate and the access road to the facility from the main road network.
