CORFU. The amendments to the open-air market regulations were unanimously approved at the Town Council meeting yesterday.

The amendments will improve the operation of the market in order to make it more competitive.

Some of the amendments are as follows:
- Hours of operation will be in line with the rest of the market (evening opening).
- Larger area for the fish stalls.
- Opportunity for other types of product to be sold such as butcher's, delicatessen, gardening and flower stalls.
- Better use of space - at the moment the stalls all look onto the central thoroughfare but with the amendments they will be open at the front and the back, thus making better use of the space and allowing more stalls to open.
- There will be a stall for the municipal business Korission - outwith the bidding procedure.
- In the new bidding process small vendors who don't have a shop will be allowed to participate.

The amendments are timed to coincide with the renewal of contracts which have nearly all run out.

The councillor from the Laiki Sispeirosi Haris Mastoras stressed that there needs to be special provision for the cleaning of the fish section and Yiannis Trepeklis pointed out that the historical and archaeological points in the area need to be promoted.

Deputy Mayor for Trade Aris Balis also considered it necessary that the municipality appoint a supervisor who will be responsible for the smooth running of the market and for liaison with the stallholders.

The bidding process is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
