CORFU. 350 scientists and internationally recognized researchers from 40 countries are expected to take part.
The Mayor of Corfu Kostas Nikolouzos opened proceedings at the Summer Institute schools and workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity today at the Mon Repos conference hall.
In Greek:
The Summer Institute is co-organized by the Municipality of Corfu and the National Technical University of Athens (EMP) in collaboration with European universities and research institutions under the supervision of the EMP Emeritus Professor Giorgos Zoupanos.
In Greek:
This year there will be 3 events between 3 August and 29 September taking place at the Mon Repos conference hall 09:00 - 13:00 and 16:00 - 20:30.
Details of the presentations and the scientific programme can be found on the website http://www.physics.ntua.gr/corfu2018/
The main objectives of the European Institute for Sciences and their Applications via the Summer Institute is:
a. Promoting European research activities in the broader field of sciences and their applications.
b. Training new scientists at post-graduate and post-doctoral level.
c. Developing a popularization programme for activities in the field of sciences and their applications and encouraging public interest.
Approximately 350 scientists from 40 countries are expected, who will learn about elementary particle physics and gravity. Around 100 top-level post-graduate students and post-doctoral researchers will be presenting their research work to 180 internationally recognized researchers.
There will also be a series of seminars for secondary level pupils and teachers and the general public. The aim of the seminars is to popularize modern scientific subjects and to encourage public interest through innovative new methods and incollaboration with the Corfu branch of the Greek Physicists' Association.
CERN Exhibition
There will be a CERN Exhibition in the foyer of Corfu Municipal Theatre from the beginning of September until the end of October. The exhibition was curated by the CERN popularization team in 2014 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its foundation and is composed of 16 large posters which describe the following in a clear and simple way:
- the organizational structure of CERN
- CERN facilities
- the function of the basic principles in CERN experiments
- some of the most important results at CERN - with emphasis on the recent discovery of the HIGGS particle
Each poster has Greek and English texts and there is also audio-visual material - videos and animations - to aid visitors' understanding.
Since 2015 the exhibition has travelled to several European cities and received exceptional reviews for the way it contributes to the understanding and education of the general public.
The organizers plan to have CERN scientists who are in Corfu for the workshops giving guided tours of the exhibition themselves. An excellent opportunity for the Corfu public.
The programme of guided tours will be announced shortly.
The exhibition is continuing until the end of October in the hope of organizing school visits.
Along with CERN, the Max Planck Institute in Munich and the National Technical University of Athens also contributed to the organization of the exhibition.
