Tension and use of chemicals near Lefkimmi landfill

Lefkimmi Cultural Society had been planning for several days to hold a peaceful march from Neohori to Lefkimmi landfill. In view of this, riot police (MAT) who had left the island returned once again.

Residents attempted to approach the landfill from the Church of Panayia Pantanasas but came face to face with the police cordon. Some residents asked that they have access to their property but the police chief told them that access to the area by the landfill was forbidden. Things got tense and chemicals were used, with a few small fires breaking out.
