Since 2002
Since 2002 European Mobility Week has become established as the most important European institution for the promotion of innovative sustainable mobility and the development of environmental consciousness. The purpose of the activities that will take place between 16 and 22 September is to encourage European local authorities to introduce and promote sustainable means of transport and to raise public awareness as to the use of alternative means of transport in their town and city.
The culmination of the week's activities is World Car-Free Day with specific urban zones which are only for the use of pedestrians, bicycles and public transport.
Every year there is a specific theme for European Mobility Week and in 2018 the slogan is "Mix and Move!" focussing on Multimodality - the mixing of transport modes in order to improve the quality of urban life with the co-existence of public transport, pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles.
In 2015 over 1,870 towns from 45 European and non-European countries took part in European Mobility Week and every year the town or city with the best results in the promotion of sustainable, alternative means of transport and the active participation of local residents is presented with an award by a special independent committee of experts.
Mix and Move - #mobilityweek
The theme for this year's European Mobility Week focusses on the benefits of mixed urban mobility. The main aim is to encourage residents to try out the different mobility solutions available in their town or city and prove wrong the widely accepted belief that the car is the only suitable means of transport.
Let's think about all the available means of transport and choose the most suitable and shortest route. By making smart choices regarding the means of mobility we choose, we can save money, become fitter and haave a positive impact on the environment.
