CORFU. ΄Save Water΄ Project: Initial working meeting at the Ionian University in Corfu.
The partners in the 'Save Water - Improvement in the management of water and supply infrastructure through smart technology, policies and tools' project held their first working meeting on Thursday 26th July at the Ionian University in Corfu. The project is part of the international programme INTERREG IPA CBC Greece-Albania 2014-20.
In Greece the following organizations are participating in the programme: Ionian Islands Region (leading partner), Epirus Region, Avlonas Region, Koritsas Region, Western Macedonia Region Environmental Centre, Ionnina Municipality, Ionian University IT Department and Western Macedonia College of Technology.
The object of the project is to develop a smart system of recording, monitoring and managing drinking water as well as improving and maintaining the existing water supply system.
The proposal for the Ionian Islands is focussed on the Municipalities of Corfu and Lefkada with a proposed budget of 530,000 Euros with immediate work to be done on the existing network such as a reverse osmosis unit, modernisation of the pumping system and installation of suitable hydrometers.
The Ionian University is a partner in the programme with 490,000 Euros to develop the system of recording, monitoring and managing of drinking water in the included regions. The total budget for the project in all the regions is 3,482,822 Euros. It was stressed at the meeting that the cooperation between Greece and Albania is of especial significance in order to achieve common strategic goals and that water supply is a high priority in the Ionian Islands and the municipalities included in the programme.
It was also stated at the meeting that there is the need for an ongoing cross-border collaboration between the two countries in European programmes.
Before the meeting began there was one minute's silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Attica wildfires, following a proposal by Ms. Verushi.
The Ionian Islands Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsanos gave the welcoming address at the meeting along with the President of Koritsas Regional Committee Ana Verushi and the President of Avlonas Regional Committee Elvis Mocka.
The following also participated in the meeting: Deputy Regional Governor for the Primary Sector and Outreach Yiannis Fontanas, Avlonas Vice-President Lambis Pantehis, Markos Avlonitis, Associate Professor at the Ionian University IT Department as well as representatives of the administrative authority for the European Programme 'Greece-Albania 2014-2020' and other personnel from the participating organizations.
