LEFKIMMI. Local residents came up against a police cordon when they attempted to enter the access road for Lefkimmi landfill.

Initially, residents spoke peacefully to the police authorities asking to be allowed past to go to their fields. Tension soon built up, however, resulting in the use of tear gas and flare grenades by the riot police (MAT) as they tried to repel the residents.

One man fainted, probably due to the tear gas, and the flare grenades set fire to some long grass with the Fire Service being called out to extinguish it.

Corfu Police denied that the fire was caused by them and only admitted that they had used smoke canisters.

The man who had fainted was taken to Lefkimmi Health Centre with breathing problems.
