CORFU. The letter from the board of the ΄Old΄ Philharmonic Society says that things have never been like this in Corfu before and residents have never been so exasperated by a Municipal problem.
The letter, written by the President Spyros Padovas, is addressed to the Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos and expresses residents' deep displeasure at the distressing situation on the island. He ends by asking him to at least retain his dignity.
The letter
Dear Mr. Mayor,
The members of the the Philharmonic Society who were at yesterday's general assembly asked us to write a letter to you expressing their deep displeasure - along with all the residents of Corfu - at the distressing sight of piles of rubbish everywhere seen by the thousands of tourists who come here for their summer holidays.
It goes without saying that it also presents a serious threat to public health.
Things have never been like this in Corfu before and residents have never been so exasperated by a Municipal problem.
Mr. Mayor, along with your team, please take a look at what you have done up to now about a problem that could be seen clearly from the first day you were voted into authority.
If you have been neglectful, indifferent, misjudged, expected political or other types of help that didn't materialise or there is any other reason that we have arrived at the present situation, if you can no longer do anything for Corfu, don't leave your fellow residents thinking that you weren't serious when you asked to take on the responsibility of becoming the First Citizen of this island.
You are a decent man - at least retain your dignity. There is a way to do that.
For the Board of the Philharmonic Society
