CORFU. The Corfu Hoteliers Association and Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners have requested that a state of emergency be declared in Corfu.

Corfu Hoteliers Association and the Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners have sent a letter to the Minister for Tourism, Elena Kountoura, requesting her intervention in the waste management problem and its consequences for tourism.

The letter:

"As you will, of course, already know from other ministries and the mass media, Corfu has now reached a dead end. For two months now, since the beginning of the tourist season, the island has been literally choked with rubbish.

The negativity that has been generated by visitors' comments has turned what was the top tourist destination in the country into the dirtiest third world tourist area in Greece.

As part of your responsibility for the country's tourist product we request that as a last resort you and the other relevant ministries declare a state of emergency in destination Corfu and use all the means available to the state to solve this problem and the public health risk that exists for all the residents and visitors."
