CORFU. It is no surprise - it was, in fact, to be expected - that there have been negative comments about Corfu from the first tourists.
You could call it the 'Chronicle of a Death Foretold' as it was well-known that sooner or later these images would be published worldwide by the media. There have already been a large number of negative comments about the situation from foreign visitors and residents on the English language Page of enimerosi.com.
The RTL report talks of the disappointment felt by tourists when confronted by the distressing sight on this island 'paradise'. The report says, "The local authorities plan to open a new landfill facility but residents are opposed to it."
Monique Vancauwenbergh, a tourist who spoke to the channel, says, "On the way from the airport to the village where we were to be staying we saw several places where the rubbish piles were metres high. There was rubbish everywhere - even in front of the Palace! It is rotting and stinking - not at all pleasant for the tourists!"
Tourists were saying that they would have expected to have been informed of the situation by TUI. The company sent a written reply to the channel's question: "Our company was only told of the situation very recently. Next week there will be a decision about the new landfill and we are in contact with everyone. For the time being, trips to Corfu are continuing normally as long as the travel experience in hotels is not affected."

It should be noted that the images in the report were taken before Saturday's rain - when the flooded roads were full of floating bags of rubbish!
