CORFU. The Corfu MP referred to the need for Corfu Antiquities Services to recruit personnel for security and cultural events.

Corfu MP Fotini Vaki put a question to the Minister for Culture and Sport regarding 'recruitment of security personnel by Corfu Antiquities Services'.

In her question she pointed out that in the current tourist season there were problems with the lack of sufficient personnel at the Old Fortress and Corfu Archaeological Museum.

She referred to the fact that the Archaeological Museum is still closed even though the renovation work was completed at the end of 2016 and it had been planned to recruit three guards and one night security officer on 8-month contracts.

In her question she also mentioned that there is free admission to the Old Fortress after 4pm as there isn't enough personnel to cover all the shifts - leading to a significant loss in income. She went on to say that there have been requests to use the site for cultural events which have had to be rejected as there isn't the necessary provision for personnel and overtime payments.

She concludes by saying that there is insufficient personnel to ensure the smooth running of the Antiquities sites in Corfu this tourist season and reinforcements are needed given the number of visitors to the island.

Questions to the Minister:

1. Is it planned to recruit extra security personnel for the archaeological sites in Corfu?

2. What is being done to allow the Old Fortress to be used for cultural events?
