CORFU. This is what is meant by ΄overfull΄!
Unfortunately, we have got used to the photos of 'mountains' of refuse at Temploni landfill. However, a drone video that the local Residents Association posted on its Page shows clearly how desperately full the facility is.
This is what they said in the post: "When watching this video, aside from the terrible management and the mountains of refuse, one can see how beautiful the surrounding area is - and we have been destroying it for the the last thirty years.
One can see houses, which existed before the landfill. The landfill is situated amongst a small cluster of lakes which are listed as protected small-island wetlands. Unprocessed sewage from the facility has been flowing into one of these, Bretanou Lake (it can be seen in the background, with black water) - which is now 'dead'!
There was never approval for the siting of the facility at this location and the Institute of Geology & Mineral Exploration (IGME) was against it due to the rich water table and soil composition. This latter has been demonstrated by the increasing amount of subsidence in the last few decades.
It is in this area that the brains in the local authority insist on constructing the integrated waste management facility.
This, in brief, is what the local authority - at all levels - is doing and wants to continue doing. This is what we have to 'accept'".
