CORFU. The main priorities of the development strategy.

The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Theodoros Galiatsatos, gave his approval to the "Integrated Spatial Development Plan to promote Corfu Town as an internationally-recognized Thematic Town, Product-Town and Creative Cultural Destination". The plan will be funded by the Regional Business Programme (PEP) for the Ionian Islands 2014-2020 (European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund) which will make 27.7m Euros available. The total budget for the plan of action comes to 71.1m Euros.

In brief, the strategy focuses on:

- Promotion of the historical elements and periods that make up the identity of the town.
- Development and promotion of 'new' urban landmarks in the town.
- The (gradual) development of a new field: creative and cultural economy, employment and business.
- Development of urban and cultural tourism, with the main focus being on the special identity, wealth of monuments and modern cultural creativity.
- Integrated management (initially) of Corfu Town as an internationally-recognized tourist destination with a specific cultural identity.
- The simultaneous attraction and intelligent management of multiple visitor sources.
- Sustainable urban development with an emphasis on the urban environment, traffic management etc.

Along with the Ionian Islands 2014-2020 Programme, which ensures the integrated nature of the project, funding of the plan of action will be sought from department programmes and other funding sources.
