CORFU. "Don΄t think about what Corfu can do for you, think about what you can do for Corfu," said Dr. Lee Durrell at the ceremony.

Dr. Lee Durrell closed her speech of thanks paraphrasing John F. Kennedy's historic statement, having spoken about her love for and strong ties with Corfu.

In recognition of the contribution the Durrell family have made to the island over many years, the Municipality awarded her the Corfu Silver Medal of Merit, in a ceremony attended by many proud members of the British community.

Dr. Lee Durrell is the widow of Gerald Durrell, the British naturalist, lover of Corfu and author of the best-selling book 'My Family and Other Animals', on which the popular British TV serial 'The Durrells' - filmed in Corfu every summer - is based.

Lee, who is a Doctor of Zoology, researcher and author, often visits the island and has shown a special interest in the protection of the natural environment in Corfu - especially the Erimitis area. She has given interviews on the subject to the Greek and international press and last year sent a letter to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras regarding Erimitis.
