Raids on shops illegally using public space

CORFU. The Municipal Police was out in force on Monday morning with measuring tapes to check on shops in the historical centre of town.

It's a common habit for tourist shops in the old town, especially in the busiest areas, to display their goods in a much wider area than they are allowed, thus restricting the space available for pedestrians.

This morning we photographed a police unit, accompanied by a police car, measuring the area used by shopkeepers.

The Deputy Mayor for Trade, Aris Balis, told Enimerosi, "The Municipality has two committees to delineate public areas and to check the space used by tables and chairs. The idea is that business owners will themselves respect these and stay within the limits, but some of them have gone too far."
