Go-ahead given for Municipal Police at Mayor΄s meeting with Minister of Interior

CORFU. What was discussed at the meeting between the Central Corfu Mayor and the Minister of the Interior.
(Central Corfu Municipality) The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands is expected to have its own Municipal Police in the second half of 2026, with the aim of addressing law violations in Corfu Town and the wider municipality in a timely and effective manner.
During a meeting with the Minister of the Interior, Thodoris Livanos, held on Thursday evening, Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos and Deputy Mayor for Planning and European Programmes, Nikos Vradis, discussed advancing the process of re-establishing the Municipal Police—an institution that was abolished 12 years ago during the memorandum period.
The Minister of the Interior, recognising the necessity of such a service for a municipality like Corfu, committed to giving priority approval for all 16 positions foreseen by the Internal Service Regulation passed in 2024.
The recruitment of municipal police officers will be conducted through ASEP (the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection) via an expedited procedure this year. Those hired will then undergo training by the Hellenic Police, and the service is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.
Indoor Training Facility
The second topic discussed at the Ministry of the Interior was the additional funding needed to complete the construction of the Indoor Training Facility in Alykes.
The Minister of the Interior showed a positive attitude toward the Municipality's request and promised continued communication to implement the project. Mr. Livanos made it clear that he would do everything necessary to ensure the facility does not remain incomplete and functions fully—this being a crucial project to meet the needs of Corfu’s sports youth.
The Indoor Training Facility, which will be available to all athletes without discrimination, is expected to be ready by mid-2026, provided there are no delays.
During the meeting, issues concerning the Diapontia Islands were also discussed, including heliports, rural road infrastructure, and the construction of facilities aimed at helping preserve life on our remote border islands.
