CORFU. The team will inspect the progress of the restoration work on the wall in Garitsa next to NAOK.

A team from the Committee on Budgetary Control (EDEL) is at present in Corfu. Amongst other things, it will be inspecting the progress of the restoration work on the wall in Garitsa from NAOK as far as the Desyllas junction. It will also monitor the management of the archaeological department's sub-project there.

The inspection is part of the committee's regular monitoring work and the team is expected to be here for about a week.

Approval from the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has still not been given for the remainder of the work - from the junction at the former Desyllas factory as far as Anemomylo. According to sources at the Archaeological Services, the file needs to go to KAS as it is a separate project and ultimately the responsibility of the Services here.

The matter caused some friction between the Regional Administration, Technical Services - who are supervising the work because of the budgetary level - and the Antiquities Inspectorate.

Approval from KAS is still being awaited for the completion of the work on the roundabout at Corfu Port and the construction of a fountain and sculpture there.
