CORFU. Residents are forming the Corfu Old Town Permanent Residents Association to deal with the complex problems and issues they face.
The following is the announcement made by the temporary Board:
All the Municipal Authorities have fought against the permanent residents of Corfu Old Town for many years now, leading to the break-up of our local community and permanent residency.
Our town is being abandoned by even those few permanent residents still remaining, who make up our great social and cultural capital.
The few remaining residents are shouldering the huge historical responsibility for the survival of the Old Town, as a community with its roots, history and whole life in this district.
If we are determined to remain in the Old Town and not to hand it over to financial interests, it is our duty to protect it from any kind of harm or expropriation.
The existing local Cultural Societies and their Coordinating Committee are no longer sufficient to face the problems and cannot respond to new needs. The problems have grown, are more complex and concern the Old Town as a whole.
So, we need to have a single Association - Corfu Old Town Permanent Residents Association - in order to achieve the following:
- Discourage permanent residents from leaving their homes in the Old Town, and aim for the resettlement of locations that have gradually been abandoned due to the dreadful everyday conditions.
- As an absolute priority protect the permanent residences from the threat of turning the Old Town into a business centre.
- Organize the community life of the Old Town so that there is a community of people with a strong identity linked to its history and traditions.
We thus call upon all permanent residents of Corfu Old Town to take an active part in our efforts to rescue the Old Town.
