Powerful thunderstorm passes through North Corfu
CORFU. Extensive damage to municipal infrastructure, causing problems with water supply, roads and electricity.
(Press Release) The Municipality of North Corfu informs residents that the passage of a strong thunderstorm, accompanied by intense lightning activity and gale-force winds, during the night of 21 to 22 July, at around 23:45, caused extensive damage to municipal infrastructure.
The gale-force winds caused trees to fall and be uprooted, significant damage to the road network and electricity grid, as well as the outbreak of fires. Damage and power outages were recorded in many areas of the Municipality, both along the coast and inland, including Almyros, Perithia, Acharavi, Mega Ydri, Sidari, Avlaki, Kassiopi, Agios Georgios Pagon and other areas.
Due to the power outages, which are affecting the operation of pumping stations and water supply facilities, disruptions to the normal water supply will occur in areas of the Municipality until electricity has been fully restored by DEDDIE crews.
From the onset of the weather phenomena and throughout the night, the services of the Municipality of North Corfu, in cooperation with the Fire Service, Civil Protection, DEDDIE and all relevant authorities, worked continuously to deal with the effects of the severe weather, remove fallen trees, restore traffic on the road network, extinguish fires and repair damage to infrastructure. Work is continuing with undiminished intensity, with the aim of fully restoring the damage and safely returning municipal infrastructure to operation.
The Municipality calls on the public to exercise especial caution.
The Municipality of North Corfu thanks the Fire Service, Civil Protection, DEDDIE, municipal crews and everyone who is working tirelessly to deal with the consequences of the severe weather.
