Kyprou Street residents demand cleanup of prison park due to fire risk
CORFU. In a memorandum accompanied by photographs submitted to municipal authorities, local residents report long-term neglect of the prison park and warn of a heightened fire risk as summer approaches.
Residents of Kyprou Street cite the risk of fire as the summer season approaches, and in a memorandum submitted to the relevant municipal services they are calling for the immediate clearing of the park of the former prison from dry grass, dense vegetation, and shrubs. They argue that the condition of neglect in the area has been ongoing for years, despite repeated concerns raised in previous years.
The residents express concern that the accumulation of flammable material, combined with high summer temperatures and winds, increases the risk of a fire breaking out in a densely populated part of the town. They also note that the park is adjacent to homes and areas of frequent daily passage, a fact which—according to them—makes preventive intervention necessary before the peak of the fire season.

Photographs are attached to the memorandum which, according to the residents themselves, depict the current condition, with uncleared areas, dry vegetation, and sections where access appears difficult due to the density of the grass. The report is accompanied by numerous signatures from local residents, who are calling not only for immediate cleaning but also for regular maintenance of the area, so that— as they state— the problem is no longer addressed in a fragmented manner.

The request is being submitted at a time when fire protection and prevention are a central focus, with local authorities being called upon to manage issues of cleaning in public spaces, parks, and areas of increased risk. Residents are now awaiting a response from the municipality and the scheduling of interventions in the prison park before summer conditions make the problem more urgent.
