CORFU. The Local Urban Plan for the construction of a 12-class primary school and kindergarten at the ‘Panagia’ site has been approved. The project, with a budget of €5.35 million, has already secured funding and a contractor is in place.

The Presidential Decree approving the Local Urban Plan for the construction of the new Gouvia–Kontokali school complex at the “Panagia” site was signed on Friday, May 8, paving the way for the start of the project.

The new complex is intended to house a 12-class primary school and a three-section kindergarten, in buildings with a total floor area of 2,614 square metres. The plans also include basketball and volleyball courts, an open-air theatre, 22 parking spaces, and landscaped green areas.

The total budget for the project amounts to €5.35 million, funded through the “Antonis Tritsis” programme, under which it had been included since 2022 on the basis of the relevant study.

According to the Municipality of Central Corfu, more than 46 administrative and technical procedures were required to complete the approval process for the Local Urban Plan and bring the project to its final institutional stage. At the same time, the tendering process for the construction contract has already been completed, and a contractor is in place and ready to proceed with construction once the remaining formal procedures are finalised.

Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos described the development as an important step toward addressing the issue of school infrastructure in the Gouvia–Kontokali area, noting that the process of advancing the project lasted approximately 28 months.
