Introduction of v-Corfu project to students at Corfu Prison Second Chance School
CORFU. On the occasion of International Museum Day 2026.
On the occasion of International Museum Day 2026, under the central theme “Museums Unite the World,” the Ionian University Museum Collections is placing the power of inclusive education at the forefront. On Monday, May 18, at 18:00, an online lecture and discussion will be held on the pioneering implementation of the v-Corfu project with students of the Second Chance School (SCS) at Corfu Prison.
The event highlights how collaboration between academic and correctional educational institutions can break down the barriers of exclusion. The use of the v-Corfu project—a digital tool for virtual tours and the promotion of cultural heritage—offered students of the prison’s Second Chance School the opportunity for:
- Access to Culture: Digital technology functioned as a bridge, allowing individuals with limited freedom of movement to engage with the archaeology and history of their region.
- Social Empowerment: The educational process focused on developing skills and strengthening students’ self-confidence through engagement with the humanities.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The project showcases the outcome of collaboration among archaeologists, IT specialists, and educators, who worked together to create a tailored learning environment.
Through the presentation of this experience at the Corfu Prison Second Chance School, the aim is to highlight the social role of museum collections. Museums are no longer static spaces for preserving objects, but active agents of social change that promote the democratisation of culture and broaden access to shared heritage for all social groups.
Monday, May 18, at 18:00.
