Central Corfu Municipality: Appeal for proper use of fireworks during Easter celebrations

CORFU. The Municipality of Central Corfu points out that the use of firecrackers is prohibited by law and poses risks not only to animals but also to the physical safety of the public, while fireworks should only be used by licensed operators.
(Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality) The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, on the occasion of the festive events of the First Resurrection and the Easter Vigil on Easter Saturday night, appeals to all residents and visitors for the proper and responsible use of fireworks and firecrackers, with respect for the well-being of pets and public safety.
This year, there has been an approximately 25% increase in the use of fireworks and firecrackers compared to previous years.
Pets, especially dogs and cats, are particularly negatively affected by the loud noises and lights of fireworks, often exhibiting signs of severe anxiety, fear and even physical harm or attempts to flee.
The Municipality recommends the following protective measures for animals:
-
Ensure that your pets are indoors, in safe and quiet areas during the hours of the celebrations.
-
Create a calm and familiar environment where they can take refuge.
-
Avoid exposing them to windows, outdoor noise, or areas with loud sounds and bright lights as much as possible.
-
Make sure they are microchipped and have identification tags in case they get frightened and run away.
-
Provide them with a shelter (e.g., a blanket or cosy corner) where they feel safe.
The Municipality of Central Corfu points out that the use of firecrackers is prohibited by law and poses dangers not only to animals but also to the physical safety of the public, while fireworks should be used exclusively by licensed professionals.
Let us preserve the traditional spirit of the season with responsibility, respecting the life and safety of all living beings.
