On the occasion of the twinning of Corfu 1st High School with the Govone school in Italy, a group of pupils and teachers travelled to the neighbouring country for a unique seven-day educational trip. The journey included visits to important historical and cultural landmarks, moments of emotion and discovery of modern Italy, as well as friendships that are sure to last over time.

Alba & Govone: Where the Past Meets the Present

The first stop was the picturesque town of Alba, where the pupils visited the Govone school and connected with their peers, exchanging views on culture and the shared history of the two nations. The Italian pupils and teachers impressed everyone with their love for the ancient Greek language and literature. The meeting culminated in a small cultural gathering, where the pupils of the 1st High School performed traditional Greek dances, drawing the Italian pupils into a shared circle of joy and celebration. It was a unique moment that highlighted the power of culture to unite people and create true friendships. The day ended with a guided tour of the region’s medieval castles.

Milan: Encountering Art and History

In cosmopolitan Milan, the pupils had the rare opportunity to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, tour the Pinacoteca di Brera, and visit the iconic Duomo Cathedral, admiring its Gothic architecture up close.

Turin: Cinema Museum & the Holy Shroud

In the aristocratic city of Turin, the pupils explored the Cinema Museum—one of the most original in Europe—and visited the Holy Shroud, where the burial cloth of Christ is kept, experiencing a unique spiritual moment.

Genoa: Honouring Kostas Georgakis

The visit to Genoa was an emotional one, as the pupils honoured the memory of Corfu student Kostas Georgakis, who set himself on fire in 1970 in protest against the dictatorship in Greece. Afterwards, the pupils visited the house of Christopher Columbus, the great explorer who discovered America. There, they learned important facts about his life, voyages, and era, gaining valuable knowledge about maritime history and the world’s great explorers. Finally, they visited the famous Genoa Aquarium, with its impressive marine exhibits.

Monte Carlo: Discovering a Unique European Principality

As part of the trip, the group visited Monte Carlo, the historic and geographically unique principality of Monaco. The pupils had the opportunity to learn about one of the smallest yet most significant states in Europe, with a long history and a distinctive political structure. During the tour, they learned about Monaco’s geographical location, its importance as an independent state, its cultural identity, and its special relationship with the rest of Europe. The visit concluded with a view of the sea and the port, highlighting the importance of shipping and trade in the region’s economic development.

Pisa: The Leaning Wonder

In Pisa, the students visited the Piazza dei Miracoli with its famous Tower, Baptistry, and Cathedral, experiencing a true sense of awe and admiration.

Florence: The Heart of the Renaissance

In the city of the Renaissance, the pupils toured the Uffizi Gallery, admired masterpieces of European art, and learned about the work of Galileo—concluding their cultural journey in the best possible way.

A Journey to Remember

The trip lasted seven days, filled with knowledge, emotion and unforgettable moments. The pupils of Corfu 1st High School returned enriched with experiences, friendships and images, proving that education is not confined to the walls of a classroom but opens up to every corner of the world.
