Collaboration between Central Corfu Municipality and animal welfare groups

CORFU. The meeting was an important step in strengthening the Municipality΄s collaboration with animal welfare organisations and adopting effective solutions for the well-being of stray animals in our area.

A meeting was held on Monday, February 10, for cooperation and development of a unified action framework for the welfare of stray animals. The Deputy Mayor of Health and Head of the Primary Sector, Spyros Galanis, met with representatives of the three Animal Welfare Organisations in the Municipality: Spyros Stravoravdis (President of KEPZ), Stamatina Tzora (President of "Adopt"), and Angeliki Anthi (Vice President of "Ark").

During the meeting, the organisations were fully briefed on the department's initiatives regarding the implementation of a new programme for the collection, medical care, and management of stray animals, as well as efforts to ensure their protection and well-being. Additionally, actions for establishing a municipal shelter and veterinary clinic were discussed.

The main topics covered in the meeting included:

 

  • Signing Cooperation Agreements: The Deputy Mayor and the Animal Welfare Organisations agreed to proceed with the signing of cooperation agreements to coordinate efforts and improve the quality of life for stray animals in the area.

  • Proposals for the Municipality’s Stray Animal Management Plan: The discussion focused on proposals for developing an organised system for the efficient care and protection of stray animals. This plan is ready for approval by the Municipal Council.

  • Participation of Animal Welfare Organisations in Educational Programmes for Pupils: The need for and agreement on the active participation of animal welfare organisations in educational initiatives for pupils and the public was stressed. These efforts aim to promote animal welfare awareness and responsible pet adoption for future generations.

  • Participation of Animal Welfare Organisations in Stray Animal Registration and Volunteer Registry Creation: The organisations agreed to collaborate with the Municipality to estimate the number of stray animals and establish a volunteer registry for active participation in their protection.

  • Proposals for the New Stray Animal Management Programme and Collection Mechanism: Discussions also included proposals to enhance the Municipality’s new stray animal management programme and strengthen the collection and care mechanisms.

  • Creation of a Website for Missing and Adoptable Animals: A proposal was made for the Municipality and animal welfare organisations to create a joint website to post announcements about missing and found animals, as well as facilitate stray animal adoptions and public awareness.

  • This meeting marked an important step in strengthening cooperation between the Municipality and animal welfare organisations, aiming for effective solutions to improve the welfare of stray animals in our community. The Municipality remains committed to continuously supporting and enhancing efforts for animal protection and public awareness.
