New ferry network between Ionian Islands comes into operation from 1st May
CORFU. The new Ionian Islands ferry network will be launched on 1st May 2018.
A ferry connection between the Ionian Islands has been demanded for years and it seems that now it will finally become a reality. The tenders that had been received were assessed on 5th February to decide which company would run the ferry service between the islands, with Corfu as the base. It was the Prime Minister himself who announced the decision to set up the network at the Regional Development Conference in Corfu.
This new development will have a positive influence on tourism in the Ionian as visitors will be able now to travel easily between the islands without having to go to the mainland. An increase in domestic tourism is also expected.
The new ferry service will take in the following ports: Corfu, Paxos, Vasiliki Lefkada, Pisaetos Ithaki, Sami Cephalonia and Zakynthos.
The Deputy Minister for Island Policy, Nektarios Santorinios, said, “It was incomprehensible that an area with such beautiful islands, culture, tourism and business could have been cut off for so many years. There is tremendous scope for development in the Ionian Islands and the Marine Ministry is determined to give it all the necessary opportunities, thus fulfilling the Prime Minister’s promise.”
Ilida Paxos Hydrofoil have announced the ferry services that will run between the Ionian Islands from 1st May until 31st October 2018. High Speed Azimut Joy Cruises will run the services and ticket prices will be announced shortly.
