CORFU. Defying the low temperatures, several brave swimmers dived into the sea this morning in an attempt to retrieve the cross and obtain the blessings.
In Corfu Town the Blessing of the Water took place at the Old Port with crowds of people gathering at Mouragia, where they had a panoramic view of the proceedings.
Following the service at the Metropolitan Church, there was a small procession to the Café Yiali and the Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands blessed the waters by throwing the cross in the sea, symbolizing the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
This year, the cross was retrieved by Alexandros Kotsis who, in addition the blessings also received a gold cross as a gift from the Archbishop.
Similar ceremonies to Bless the Water took place at all the coastal parishes in Corfu as well as at Potamos.
