Blessing of the Waters today
CORFU. Archbishop Nektarios performed the Blessing of the Waters ceremony today by immersing the Holy Cross in the sea in commemoration of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.
The Blessing of the Waters took place again this year at the Old Port on Saturday, 6 January, where a crowd gathered to witness the brave divers who jumped in to retrieve the Holy Cross.
The ceremony was preceded by a service at the Metropolitan Church, followed by a procession to the Cafe Yiali. The Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos, and the Diapontia Islands, Nektarios, then performed the Blessing of the Waters, with the immersion of the Holy Cross in the sea, commemorating the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by Saint John the Baptist.
The Cross was retrieved by Paraskevas, achieving this for the second time. The Archbishop rewarded him with a golden cross, while all those who dove into the sea were rewarded with a silver cross.
