Stones and earth falling from the walls of the New Fortress

CORFU. The walls along the trench around the New Fortress are starting to show serious signs of erosion - not only as a result of the passage of time but also as a consequence of this summer’s fires.

The consequences of the two fires this summer have already become quite obvious along the banks of the New Fortress following the first downpours of the autumn. The first signs are falling stones – some quite large – endangering passers-by as well as the cars that are parked at the side of the road.

Large quantities of earth also slid down with the recent rainfall, no longer held in place by the grasses and plants that were burnt in the fires. With the rain the earth became mud, meaning that it can’t be cleared away by ordinary sweeping brushes.

Taking a closer look, one can also see water running through holes created by erosion, threatening to destroy this byzantine UNESCO cultural heritage monument.
