According to an announcement by the Mayor of Central Corfu, Stefanos Poulimenos, funding amounting to €1,930,000 has been secured from the “Ionian Islands 2021–2027” Programme for Mon Repos. Following a decision by the Regional Governor, Yiannis Trepeklis, and after the Municipality submitted a comprehensive proposal, a project is now beginning that combines the protection of natural wealth, the promotion of archaeological treasures, and improved accessibility for residents and visitors to the island.

Announcement

The flagship project for the enhancement and protection of the forest, gardens, and biodiversity of the municipal estate of Mon Repos has been included in the “Ionian Islands 2021–2027” Programme, with the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands as the beneficiary. Under the relevant decision by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis, the amount of €1,930,000 has been allocated for this project.

The project was studied and proposed for funding to the ESPA Managing Authority following coordinated actions and cooperation between the Municipality and the “Friends of Corfu” Association.

Main components of the project

The project focuses on the integrated management of the site, combining environmental safety with the preservation and promotion of its historical significance.

It includes:

  • Fire Protection: Implementation of modern systems to fully safeguard the estate against the risk of fire.
  • Accessibility Restoration: Reconstruction of walking paths using environmentally compatible materials, following the existing routes to ensure safe access for visitors.
  • Forestry & Archaeological Protection: Preparation of specialised research on the urban forest and the carrying out of rescue archaeological works to preserve the site’s historical heritage.

Statement by the Mayor

On the occasion of this positive development, the Mayor of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands, Stefanos Poulimenos, stated:

“Securing funding for Mon Repos, through the decision of Regional Governor Yiannis Trepeklis, represents a development of crucial importance for the preservation of a site with centuries-long history, exceptional cultural significance, and strong social symbolism for Corfu.

The inclusion of our Municipality’s proposal in the ESPA programme opens the way for the creation of conditions that will protect and highlight the invaluable botanical garden and the precious antiquities located within it. With the €1.9 million in funding, the historic estate will become an organised, safe, and accessible space for every resident and visitor.

A decisive role in this effort was played by the cooperation between the ‘Friends of Corfu’ Association and our Municipality’s Technical Services and Planning Directorate. Thanks to this partnership, Mon Repos will receive the practical care and attention it deserves.

I extend my warm thanks to everyone who worked on and supported this highly important initiative.”
