CORFU. Nikos Olympios speaks out on Municipal Theatre injury: accountability and urgent measures needed

The Mechanical and Electrical Engineer and former president of Corfu Old Town Association of Permanent Residents, Nikos Olympios, has made a public statement following the injury of a thirteen-year-old pupil at the Municipal Theatre, highlighting issues of responsibility and, above all, the need for substantive solutions.

As he points out, responsibility is not limited to the Municipal Authority but concerns the overall administrative functioning of the Municipality and its long-standing weaknesses. Understaffing, the lack of systematic inspections, and the absence of a prevention policy have created an environment where problems are repeated without being addressed at their root.

Instead of political confrontation, he calls for the immediate mobilisation of all competent bodies to carry out meaningful and continuous inspections: municipal services, the Fire Department, regional public health authorities, administrative oversight bodies, and, in a supporting role, the Technical Chamber.

Key issues to be inspected:

  • Fire protection: Deficiencies in fire detection systems, alarms, and firefighting equipment.

  • Emergency exits: Reports of blocked escape routes, posing serious risks.

  • Ventilation – air conditioning: Conditions unsuitable for a public gathering space.

  • Passive safety: The pupil’s fall into an unguarded hatch reveals critical gaps.

  • Sanitary facilities: Degraded condition.

  • BMS system: Absence of centralised monitoring of installations.

  • Technical adequacy: Problems mainly related to waterproofing.

What is truly at stake

Nikos Olympios stresses that the issue is not only who is to blame, but how to ensure that such an incident does not happen again. He proposes an immediate technical inspection, full remediation of deficiencies, and the establishment of a permanent inspection mechanism.

He concludes that the safety of public spaces must be an absolute priority—especially when it concerns children.
