Another step announced in restoration of Old Town Hall and Municipal Theatre

CORFU. The regional governor and the mayor, on the occasion of the inclusion in the 2021–2027 programme, made another announcement regarding the planned work at the Old Town Hall, the Municipal Theatre, and the surrounding area.

Central Corfu Municipality Press Office) The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Yiannis Trepeklis, signed the inclusion acts in the ESPA Programme for two important projects for the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands.

As far as the restoration of the Old Town Hall is concerned, the project includes:

a) Preparation of studies for the restoration of the building (currently in progress).

b) Restoration works on the Old Town Hall according to the results of the studies.

c) The procurement of equipment, including furniture (bookcases, desks, tables, chairs) as well as electronic, sound, and projection equipment, so that it can host exhibition spaces, archival material, citizen information areas, ceremonies, events, and receptions of official guests. The total budget amounts to €3,526,989 with an implementation period of 24 months.

The Municipal Theatre

  • Beneficiary: Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands

  • Budget: €1,952,737.43

  • Date of Inclusion: August 21, 2025

  • Implementation Period: from January 1, 2026 to May 31, 2028

There is also a sub-project for environmental redevelopment foreseen through a programmatic agreement, with more specific interventions: the redevelopment of the surrounding area between the Municipal Theatre and the Regional Unit building, the extension of the square, planting, urban equipment, stormwater drainage network, lighting, paving. The budget is €950,000, with an additional archaeological sub-project of €25,000.

According to the Regional Authority's press release, a fourth sub-project is also foreseen, with the Technical Chamber of Greece – Corfu Branch as the beneficiary. This concerns the promotion of the architectural work of Pericles Sakellarios, who in the 1960s designed the Theatre in the form it has today.
