120 violations of crash helmet law in Corfu last week

CORFU. The police checks are part of the campaign ΄Zero Tolerance for Not Wearing a Helmet΄.
(Ionian Islands Regional Police Department) Police checks on the Ionian Islands continue with undiminished intensity, as part of the campaign “Zero tolerance for not wearing a helmet”, aiming to ensure compliance with the new Highway Code.
According to data published for the eighth week of the campaign (August 18–24, 2025), a total of 310 violations for not wearing a protective helmet were recorded on the Ionian Islands. Of these, 120 were registered in Corfu, highlighting the need to intensify inspections.
The new Highway Code introduces significantly stricter penalties, sending a clear message about the importance of protecting human life.
The new fines for Corfu and the Ionian Islands are as follows:
-
€350 fine and suspension of driving license for 30 days for motorcycle drivers and for drivers who fail to ensure the safety of their passenger.
-
€350 fine for motorcycle passengers.
-
€30 fine for drivers of Light Personal Electric Vehicles (LPEVs).
The violations involved 258 drivers of various vehicles (motorcycles, ATVs, tricycles, LPEVs, and delivery riders), as well as 52 passengers. Authorities stress that the purpose of the campaign is not to impose fines, but to raise public awareness about the mandatory use of helmets as a protective measure against serious injuries.
Police services will continue daily checks with a strong presence on the roads, in order to establish more responsible driving behavior.
