CORFU. There were 475 police checks.
(Ionian Islands Regional Police Department) Checks and awareness-raising actions carried out by the Traffic Police, regional Police Departments, and the Road Accident Control and Prevention Teams in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, and Lefkada continue, as part of the campaign ‘Zero tolerance for not wearing a helmet,’ with the aim of ensuring full compliance by drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles, as well as users of Light Personal Electric Vehicles.
In the 43rd week of the campaign, from 20 to 26 April, a total of 475 checks were carried out and 107 violations were confirmed for not using a protective helmet (35 in Corfu, 31 in Zakynthos, 25 in Cephalonia and 16 in Lefkada).
The above violations concerned 96 drivers (72 on two-wheelers, 21 on LPEVs and 3 delivery riders) and 11 passengers.
The State is sending a clear message of zero tolerance toward not wearing a helmet, through the tightening of penalties, as follows:
• €350 fine and suspension of the driving licence for 30 days for the driver of a two-wheeler (the same penalties also apply to a driver who does not ensure the safety of a passenger).
• €350 fine for the passenger of a two-wheeler.
• €30 fine for the driver of an LPEV.
In cases of repeat offences, the penalties increase significantly.
