34 fines imposed by Central Corfu Municipal Cleaning & Recycling Service over last few days

CORFU. The fines ranged from €200 to €2000.

Thirty-four fines were imposed in total in recent days by the Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipal Cleaning & Recycling Service.

The regulations violated were as follows:

Packaging waste (cardboard boxes, wooden crates, etc.) from shops, offices, etc., must be collected only after their volume has been minimised by compression or another suitable method (e.g., tying). (Article 8.2)

  • Number of fines imposed: 7

  • Fine per violation: €400 (doubled in case of recurrence)

Failure to minimise the volume of all types of waste originating from food service establishments, wholesale businesses, supermarkets, retail stores, etc. (Articles 13.3–13.7a)

  • Number of fines imposed: 14

  • Fine per violation: €40 per item, bag, or package (doubled in case of recurrence)

Deposit of packaging materials or recyclable materials in mechanical waste collection bins (Article 11)

  • Number of fines imposed: 2

  • Fine per violation:

    • Businesses: €100 per item, bag, or package

    • Hotels: €200 per item, bag, or package

Placing waste outside someone else’s property, hanging waste on trees, or throwing it into the street or onto thepavement. Where waste cannot be collected via bins, it must be placed in strong, closed plastic bags and collection schedules must be followed. (Article 7.5)

  • Number of fines imposed: 1

  • Fine per violation: €200

Parking vehicles in front of waste bins (Article 7.8)

  • Number of fines imposed: 6

  • Fine per violation: €200 (doubled in case of recurrence) and removal by the Traffic Police.

Deliberate abandonment of objects or rubble from contractors’ or transport companies’ professional vehicles in streets or other public spaces (Article 9.3c)

  • Number of fines imposed: 4

  • Fine per violation: €2,000

The disposal of waste outside of bins is strictly prohibited.
