Restoration of Phoenix Theatre and Villa Kokotos included in ESPA programme

CORFU. The two projects have a total budget of over 9 million euros.

(Ionian Islands Regional Authority) The inclusion of two important cultural infrastructure projects for Corfu in the ESPA "Ionian Islands 2021–27" Programme was signed by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis.

The projects concern the restoration of the Phoenix Theatre and Villa Kokotos, with a total budget exceeding 9 million euros.

In detail, the scope of the two projects—which, upon completion, are expected to add significant value to Corfu’s cultural identity—is as follows:

1. Restoration of the Phoenix Theatre in Corfu

Project Budget: €7,891,437
Final Beneficiary: Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands

The project concerns the complete restoration and functional upgrade of the historic Phoenix Theatre.

It includes:

  • Preparation of studies and structural reinforcement of the load-bearing structure

  • Restoration of external façades and the metal roof of the open-air theatre

  • Works in interior and auxiliary spaces

  • Extensive electromechanical upgrades (heating, air conditioning, water supply, drainage, fire safety, lighting, stage design, sound system)

  • Accessibility provisions for people with disabilities

  • Additionally, the project includes the procurement of equipment (seating), archaeological and restoration works by the Ministry of Culture, and connection to the electricity grid.

2. Restoration of Villa Kokotos  in the Archaeological Site of the Ancient Port of Alkinoos

Project Budget: €1,200,000
Final Beneficiary: Ministry of Culture – Directorate for the Protection & Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Monuments

The project involves the restoration and utilisation of the preserved modern monument "Kokotos Villa", located within the archaeological site of Corfu’s ancient port. The aim is to accommodate research and educational activities, supporting the comprehensive promotion of the archaeological site.

It includes:

  • Supplementary technical studies and updating of existing plans

  • Restoration works (construction and electromechanical) on the building shell

  • Equipment for research and educational purposes

  • Enhancement of the surrounding landscape

The project will also be accompanied by communication and publicity actions, including an information sign, distribution of brochures, and organisation of a related seminar.

After signing the inclusion of these two important projects in the "Ionian Islands 2021–27" Programme, the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yiannis Trepeklis, stated:

"The inclusion of these projects is clear proof that the Ionian Islands Regional Authority is consciously investing in culture, our historical memory, and the promotion of our islands’ cultural heritage. These projects are not just about restoring buildings—they strengthen Corfu’s position on the modern cultural map in a meaningful and sustainable way."
