Abandoned vehicles being removed
CORFU. "By collecting the vehicles, the Municipality is contributing to the prevention of waste generation, reuse-recycling, and further utilisation of these, as end-of-life vehicles."
(Central Corfu Municipality) Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality has announced that the process of marking, removing and recycling abandoned vehicles within its jurisdiction is now underway. The identification and removal will be carried out by the Department of Cleanliness and Recycling.
Compliance with the provisions on abandoned vehicles is of critical importance to our Municipality and aims to improve the quality of life for residents and the town's image, ensure parking availability, protect public health, and promote environmental care and sustainability.
By collecting the vehicles, the Municipality is contributing to the prevention of waste generation, reuse-recycling, and further utilisation of these, as end-of-life vehicles.
Definition of Abandoned Vehicles
Abandoned vehicles, with or without licence plates, are defined as those that:
a) Are left on public, municipal, or community roads where parking is prohibited, for more than 30 days.
b) Are left in other public, municipal, community, or port areas (whether shared or not), for more than 90 days, and without the authorisation of the relevant service or authority.
c) Are left on private property without prior consent from the owner or holder of the property, as per their statement.
d) Pose a general hazard to the environment, public health, and safety of residents, as well as to public or private property, particularly when their condition prevents them from fulfilling their intended purpose.
Reporting and Removal Process
The identification of abandoned vehicles will be carried out either by the responsible municipal staff or with the assistance of residents via:
- Telephone: 26610 24444 and 15601
- The online platform for submitting citizen requests on the website: www.corfu.gr
- Email notification to: vmayorwr@corfu.gov.gr
If an inspection by municipal staff determines that a vehicle meets any of the above criteria, the official process for marking and removal for recycling as an end-of-life vehicle will begin.
An abandoned vehicle not claimed by its owner within 45 days (and without confirmation of theft, misappropriation or involvement in criminal activity by the police) will become the property of the Municipality or Community as an end-of-life vehicle.
Important Notice for Vehicle Owners
Vehicle owners whose vehicles fall under the above criteria (a) to (d) are requested to remove them immediately and store them on their own property. Otherwise, the marking and removal process will proceed. It is pointed out that removing the municipal markings (stickers) by owners does not stop the process, nor does relocating and parking the vehicle in a nearby spot. For vehicles identified again, additional fines, as stipulated by the Cleanliness Regulation, will be imposed.
Timeline and Next Steps
Please note that as of April 2024, there will no longer be a contractor for the collection and recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Considering the deadlines and waiting periods mandated by law for the classification and removal of these vehicles, the first vehicles are expected to be removed by late April.
