Presentation of Ionian Islands Bionian programme following completion
CORFU. The project was carried out as part of the ESPA 2014-2020 Programme.
The BIONIAN project, titled "Actions for the protection and promotion of biodiversity in ecosystems and areas of natural beauty in the Ionian Islands Region through 'smart' systems for detection, recording, digital mapping and management of pressures," has been completed by the Ionian Islands Regional Authority
The project was implemented within the framework of the EU's ESPA 2014-2020 programme. The Ionian Islands Regional Authority has announced that the presentation of the project will take place on Monday, December 2nd, at 7:00 pm, in the conference room of the Corfu Regional Unit (former Prefecture building, 13 Spyrou Samara Street).
The project was carried out with the collaboration of the Ionian Islands Regional Authority as the coordinating body, the Ionian University, the Benaki Phytopathological Institute and the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas. It was funded by the ESPA "Ionian Islands 2014-2020" Programme under the Priority Axis "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development."
The BIONIAN project achieved the following:
-
Soil Mapping: The project produced a soil map of the Ionian Islands along with thematic maps highlighting erosion risks, soil fertility, suitability for organic additives, and soil nutrient components. These datasets will serve as a guide for sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to the preservation of soil health for future generations.
-
Geographical and Ecological Documentation: BIONIAN created detailed land-use maps, recording the dynamics of agricultural areas, forests, wetlands and water resources across the islands, facilitating the long-term monitoring and protection of critical ecosystems.
-
Risk Assessment from Natural Disasters: By identifying areas vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and biodiversity-related challenges, BIONIAN provides local authorities with essential information to take timely preventive measures for ecosystem protection.
-
Online Monitoring Platform: A GIS-based online platform developed by the project acts as a central hub for monitoring biodiversity, soil conditions and water resources in the Ionian Islands. It enables the Region and other stakeholders, including private individuals, to make informed decisions for sustainable management.
-
Database and Environmental Resource Index: A database was designed and developed to organise and streamline existing, often scattered, environmental information. This tool aims to improve the efficiency of regional administration staff.
-
Promotion of Ecotourism and Environmental Awareness: Through the creation of digital tools and routes, BIONIAN highlights the region's natural beauty, positioning the Ionian Islands as a model ecotourism destination and a leader in environmental responsibility.
